Champagne is a blended wine, meaning it is elaborated from a blend of wines from differents ‘crus’, different grapes (except for ‘blanc de blancs’ : 100% chardonnay) and different years (except for a declared vintage).
The blending is done at the beginning of the year following the harvest, after a few months storing the wines in vats.Months during which, these still wines, called ‘vins clairs’, were carefully and regularly tasted. This allow us to determine the potential of each in the future blends (or cuvées).
The blending process is where all the magic of Champagne lies. Each year is different and there is no fixed recipe. It is the Art of the GARDET tasters and blenders that produces the continuity of style and quality for which GARDET is renowned.
We use not only the wines from the year but also, for non-vintages, the best wines from previous years that we store and age partly in oak casks.
Storage in oak remains exceptional in Champagne, but GARDET have expanded their ‘library’ of wines in oak
The wines aged in the oak are used in our Brut Special blend, giving a specific complexity, length and body.
Once the blending of the different ‘cuvées’ is done, the wines are bottled.
